SURF-study

Radiofrequency Ablation for Benign Symptomatic Thyroid Nodules in the Netherlands.

SURF-study
Afgerond onderzoek
This study examined the introduction of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) as a new, less invasive treatment option for patients with benign thyroid nodules that cause symptoms such as difficulty swallowing or a sensation of pressure. The study was conducted within the Dutch Thyroid Network in three hospitals.

The treatment led to a clear reduction in nodule size: on average, 65% after one year and 90% after three years. Patients also reported an improvement in quality of life, both in general and in thyroid-related complaints. Most patients experienced no side effects; a small number had mild or temporary complaints.

This study shows that RFA is a safe and effective alternative treatment for people with symptoms caused by benign thyroid nodules—without the need for surgery.
