On Thursday 25 January 2024, S.P.J. (Sam) van Dijk defended his PhD thesis at Erasmus University Rotterdam, titled Reducing the Burden of Thyroid Nodules and Cancer. In the first part of his dissertation, he explored strategies to reduce the burden of disease in patients with thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer, including approaches to make treatments less invasive and more patient-friendly. In the second part, he focused on hypoparathyroidism—the most common complication following thyroid surgery. By better understanding and characterizing this complication, his research contributes to improved decision-making in treatment and follow-up care.
Dr. Van Dijk has been closely involved in several studies within the SchildklierNetwerk over the past years. His work has provided valuable insights into the care of patients with thyroid cancer and contributes to the continued refinement of thyroid care in the Netherlands. The SchildklierNetwerk warmly congratulates Dr. Van Dijk on this remarkable achievement!
