Efficient referrals

Fewer unnecessary second opinions through regional collaboration

Efficient referrals
Afgerond onderzoek
This study explored how intensified collaboration between hospitals affects the care of patients with thyroid nodules or thyroid cancer. Since 2016, ten hospitals in the Southwestern Netherlands have been working together within the Thyroid Network. Every two weeks, physicians from these hospitals jointly discuss complex cases in a multidisciplinary tumor board, following shared care pathways for all patients.

Thanks to this collaboration, fewer patients need to visit the academic hospital for a second opinion, while the quality of care remains high. Physicians report positive experiences and say they learn a lot from each other. As a result, patients can often receive high-quality, specialist-advised care closer to home.
