Regional impact on thyroid cancer treatment

Developments in thyroid cancer treatment through regional collaboration

Regional impact on thyroid cancer treatment
Afgerond onderzoek
This study examined how the treatment of thyroid cancer changed in the Southwestern region of the Netherlands between 2010 and 2021. Since 2016, ten hospitals in this region have been working together within the Thyroid Network.

Partly due to this collaboration, care for patients with simple or low-risk thyroid cancer is increasingly provided at regional hospitals, while more complex cases are referred to the academic center. Treatments have become less invasive in recent years: hemithyroidectomy is performed more often, and radioactive iodine is used less frequently. The quality of care appears to be maintained, as the number of post-surgical complications has not increased.
